SMASH (Sarasota-Manatee Atheists & Secular Humanists) is a group of atheists and humanists based in Sarasota and Manatee Counties on Florida’s beautiful gulf coast. We are focused on building a vibrant community of freethinkers in our area with an emphasis on social opportunities, activism and outreach.
We get together several times each month for lively and thoughtful discussions on atheist and humanist topics, including at our monthly chapter meetings and our “Living Without Religion” dinner discussions. We have a very active members-only Facebook page. SMASH members also meet regularly for family picnics, book club, and twice-yearly solstice parties.
Our other activities include:
maintaining the Church-State Watchdog website (www.cswd.us), where we monitor and collect data on church-state separation violations at local government meetings;
volunteering for the Keep Sarasota County Beautiful program, through which we maintain and clean five beach access points on Siesta Key every quarter; and
Meet the Atheists, where we interact with the general public at festivals and other public events to promote a positive image of atheism.
SMASH meetings and events are coordinated through our Meetup page: www.meetup.com/Sarasota-Manatee-Atheists-and-Secular-Humanists-SMASH. We organized from the remnants of a local Atheists of Florida chapter in September, 2012 and we have 100+ members. SMASH is a free-to-join, no-dues organization (but donations are welcome!).
